Dogs and Heat

BEAT THE HEAT, YOUR DOG WILL THANK YOU!
As many of you already know, we are avid lovers of our (and your) furry friends.
Your car in NOT a kennel

Uhhhh ohhhhh.... another self righteous piece on what's right for YOUR dog.
We come in peace

We don't profess to know your story

Yes, the best case scenario is not leaving your dog in a car, is that realistic?

Perhaps, you just came back from the dog park and ran into the local gas station to do your own business because it just couldn't wait... or, maybe... there are several reasons why you may have left your furry friend in the car for a short period of time.
Here are some suggestions:

For those unplanned "just gotta run in for a sec moments"

Consider getting sun shades across your vehicle's windshield

Park in the shade

Invest in a battery powered fan that can be secured between the car's window frame and closed window

If possible, travel with a human companion that is willing to hang out when you must leave

Leave a bowl (or two) or water for your pet.  Alternatively, consider getting a water bottle (like the hamsters have) and hang it over your seat.

Post the time you left on your vehicle, add your cell phone number and place it a visible spot.  You might get a few unwanted calls or texts but considering the options if you can't be reached it's a great alternative!

Regardless what he/she doesn't say errands are no fun!
Truth is, I feel terribly guilty leaving my pup behind
How did I cure my separation anxiety?
Simply, by providing her with a peanut butter filled Kong when I leave
Next, I give her a piece of liver jerky upon my return
Ta da!  It took a few times but we got the hang of it!
Finally, we are not pet experts and we always suggest consulting your vet and/or local pet expert for professional advice on how to care for your pet xo

DIY Painted Coffee Table

Bring Nature indoors with an upcycled DIY Coffee Table!

Let me just start off by saying that we don't just love nature, we live it!

The thing is, sanding, and stripping a piece of old furniture can be time consuming. We certainly don't want to take time away from walking the nature trails!  The perfect solution - Chalk Paint®, it practically eliminates prep time when painting furniture.
I absolutely LOVE Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® but... it's not available everywhere.  Lowe's Home Improvement store sells a great Chalk Paint® alternative.

I used Linen White for the base coat.  I must warn you, the instructions on Lowe's website suggest that it takes one coat... I'm thinking not.  After the first coat I gasped!  Ohhhh uhhhh.... what have I done?!  No worries, I just had to be patient and let it dry.  Two coats and my faith was restored in the amazing paint - no sanding, no stripping!
Great! While that's drying, it's time to gather up some craft paint.  You will need blue, white and black and some paint medium.  If you don't have these supplies i always suggest purchasing from your local independent store - I always support local businesses when we can!  In Ottawa, I suggest Wallack's.
The next step is creating the background.  You can do this by using your blue paint,  blending until you fade into white and let it dry.  Next, add some paint medium to your white paint - this will give it a thicker texture.  Then make your birch tree shapes, and don't worry, no two trees are alike!  The imperfections will make it more natural - go with it!  I used an old loyalty card to apply the paint, this gave the trees dimension.  Let this dry completely....very important!  Next, take a small amount of black paint and add horizontal lines in random places just as you would see on a birch tree.
I applied a top coat of Varathane to give it the table some protection.
Ta da!  There you have it!
I promise, the next DIY project will have more pictures to illustrate the steps.  I have to admit that when I made the table I wasn't thinking about sharing it but... I LOVE it sooooo much I just had to share!!  I look forward to sharing more detailed instructions for the next project.  If you decide to do this, we'd love to see your finished projects!
Happy painting!

Meet the Mascots!

We would like to introduce you to Dexter, the Yorkshire Terrier; on duty at the Nature's Window warehouse.  Dexter is frequently referred to as Tiny Tapper because his little feet travel the halls "supervising" the action!

Seen above, Dexter is taking a break from overseeing the shipping area to do a little paperwork :)  Sooo don't be too suprised if you call Nature's Window and hear a little bark in the background - we assure you, it's a tough job keeping watch!  No worries, he finds plenty of time to nap in a comfy chair before heading home in the evening.

Some of you may have been fortunate to meet Wendell (shown above), he shared many days with the folks at Nature's Window Warehouse.  The Old English Sheepdog Angel Dog is dedicated to Wendell.  May the sunshine always be on his side.

Alas, the latest addition to the Nature's Window Family!  Annie (seen above) is a beautiful St. Bernard - 170 pounds and growing!  She assists at the home office (although, truth to tell, she really does more sleeping than assisting...can anyone say couch potato?).

We don't just manufacture and distribute nature & animal themed products at Nature's Window, we live it!  And yes, our furry friends are inspirational when developing our Decorative Wall Hooks!

How to Refill a Lighter

So you purchased a Gibson Original Lighter and you want to know how to refill it, we thought you might ask!

Gibson Original Lighters

You may purchase readily available butane gas from your local hardware store, we prefer Lowe's and Canadian Tire where you can also find a selection of Gibson Original Lighters.  However, Gibson Original Lighters may be purchased from numerous independent retailers, if you are looking for a store in your area please don't hesitate to pop us an email at info@natures-window.com or call us at 1-800-363-0421 and we will be pleased to assist you!

Important:  We recommend you follow the instructions and safety warnings on the butane refillable can.

1.  For your safety:  If you have turned up the adjustment screw wheel or handle to increase the flame when the butane was low, you must turn it down!

2.  Locate the refill port on your lighter (on most lighters it is a round hole with an "eye" in the middle.  On lighters the refill port may be covered by a white safety cover and you must slide the cover to the side).

3.  With the Butane Gas pointing away from you and downward to the refill port, push the can's nozzle into the port.  Rotate it a little to ensure that it is engage.  Push down on the can and fill.  You may need to pump it up and down slightly.

When the lighter is full,  you will get a little sprayback or overflow - STOP.  Remove the butane can.

Butane will not ignite in cold temperatures, please ensure that your lighter is at room temperature before lighting.

Important:  Before lighting, turn the adjustment wheel or screw to low.

*These instructions are only a recommendation, please follow instructions on the butane can and follow manufacturer's instructions!  Please, do not allow children to refill lighters or play with lighters.

How's it Made?

Twist it, Turn it, Spin it....can you get the ring off?

Horseshoe Tricks made right here in Canada!

Sometimes, we hear comments, "Cool!" "That's really neat!" and there are other times when we hear comments that our line can easily be duplicated - we think not!  After all, we finish all of the horseshoe products with a special solution... almost as secret as how Cadbury gets the caramel into each little square!

How's it Made?

The first step is to gather all of the components:
2 horseshoes, 2 chain links, and one lucky ring

Next, we dip the horseshoes into a unique finishing solution!  We'd love to tell you about the solution but really... that is our secret!

The horseshoes are hung to dry

Next, the chains are carefully welded onto the horseshoes (of course we would never suggest doing this at home!) Our welder is is a qualified tradesman :)

After the links are welded in place it's done!  Errr.... no.  Next, the sanding begins!  Each horseshoe chain link and horseshoe are carefully sanded to remove the residue created by the welds.  We carefully get into each nook and cranny to get the horseshoe tricks prepared for the next step.

It's time to attach the ring so the fun can begin!  Your job is to figure out how to get the ring off!  Twist it, turn it, spin it!

Let the fun begin!!
